CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom, May 2004 - Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) and Kolon Industries, Inc., Republic of Korea announced today that they have entered into an agreement whereby CDT will transfer polymer light emitting diode (PLED) technology and PLED ink-jet printing expertise. CDT will provide the product and process knowledge, data and materials to give Kolon a state-of-the-art understanding of PLED device structures and their fabrication by ink-jet printing. The agreement heralds another step towards the mass commercialisation of PLED technology in consumer products.
The technology transfer will take place at CDT’s Technology Development Centre in Godmanchester, UK, where CDT has installed the world’s first open and flexible electroluminescent display manufacturing environment dedicated to PLED technology advancement, evaluation and technology transfer.
David Fyfe, CEO of CDT, said, "We are very pleased that Kolon has entered into this agreement as it represents their first step to becoming a CDT licensee and to commercialising PLED technology and CDT looks forward to building a long-term relationship with Kolon. A growing number of well-resourced corporations are concluding that CDT's PLED solution processable technology holds the most promise for the production of OLED displays on larger substrates. OLEDs can never become truly competitive with LCD unless the economies of larger substrates can be accessed".
