Polymer light emitting diode (PLED) technology for flat panel displays is breaking fresh ground with the development of new blue materials which comfortably exceed 30,000 hours lifetime @ 100cd/m². Cambridge Display Technology, based in the UK, has been able to achieve this result through a combination of novel chemistry and the use of a unique polymer interlayer, achieving results ten times better than those achievable only two years ago.
Red and green PLED materials have been developed with long lifetimes for some while, but blue has always presented more of a challenge. Now, all three colours are available with lifetimes which open up additional display product applications.
Not only is the lifetime of the new material dramatically longer, but development of the interlayer has also improved device efficiencies by more than a third.
Careful selection of materials has ensured that the complete range of colours can be formulated around common device architectures, with clear cost benefits for display makers.
About CDT
Cambridge Display Technology is a global leader in the research, development and commercialisation of light emitting polymers (PLEDs) which are targeted for use in a wide range of electronic display products used for information management, communications and entertainment. Features include reduced power consumption, size, thickness and weight, very wide viewing angle, superior video imaging performance and the potential for use on flexible display substrates. Current CDT licensees are actively developing their manufacturing strategies.
